Lecture: The Science of Searching for El Dorado: How Early Voyages of Exploration Invented Science
Wednesday, October 10 2007, 7:30pm - 9:00pm

In this anniversary year for the founding of Jamestown, the popular and familiar historical tales of exploration have been told and re-told. The names—Raleigh, Drake, Smith—and many others have a common tale to tell: untold riches exist in a foreign land that can only be reached by arduous journey past many obstacles. The untold story behind these narratives, though, is that of early scientific discovery. Historian Robert D. Hicks tells these tales and explores the meaning of these early scientific accomplishments, and what was meant by "science" during voyages of exploration. No science background is needed; the only requirement is that you enjoy discovering the world! $12 per person/ $8 for students.
