The Craft of Shakespeare: A Free Workshop by Elsewhere Shakespeare

  • Agecroft Hall & Gardens 4305 Sulgrave Road Richmond, VA, 23221 United States (map)

What can we learn about Shakespeare when we approach his plays the same way that his original actors would have done?

An actor himself, Shakespeare understood the craft of performance and wrote his plays not only with tools embedded in them, but for a consistent company who understood not just the nuts and bolts of the text, but each other.

What happens when we put ourselves in the shoes of an actor in 1600? How can we learn the tools embedded in Shakespeare’s texts? How can we build the level of trust that would’ve been existed between the ensemble at the Globe? How can working from a “part,” and having less information about the rest of the play actually make us more attentive and effective performers? How can we learn to engage the text with the rest of our bodies and not just with our heads?

Elsewhere Shakespeare started as an attempt to apply the DIY ethos of the punk scene to producing Shakespeare. But as they tried to make the plays cheaper, faster, and easier to produce, they ended up accidentally reverse-engineering a lot of historical staging practices from Shakespeare’s original theatres.

Join the actor-managers from Elsewhere for a free workshop that will blend history with performance theory, giving you not only tools to make you a more empowered actor, but knowledge of Elizabethan England and how Shakespeare’s theatres worked.

This workshop is designed for ages 18+.
Space is very limited.
Tickets are FREE.
