About The Event

Agecroft Hall & Gardens and Virginia Holocaust Museum partner to present Judaism in Early Modern England and 20th Century Virginia in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Starting with the expulsion of the Jews in 1290, those of the Jewish faith still remaining in England led a life of secrecy, forced conversions, and discrimination. This tour focuses on the 16th and 17th century, discussing their eventual re-entry, professions held, stereotypes associated with their work, and, of course, Williams Shakespeare’s Shylock. Emphasis will be placed on the Priest Hole and selected objects from the museum collection.

The tour will conclude in the Williams Library with a uniquely-Richmond story to tie the past and present together. Megan Ferenczy, Director of Education at the Virginia Holocaust Museum, will be discussing 20th century antisemitism and how a local Richmond family responded to the antisemitism in 1930s Germany.

This tour is also offered on Tuesday, April 10th.

Advanced payment is required and the deadline is April 2nd for the April 3rd tour and April 9th for the April 10th tour.

Price: $8.00 per person; Free for Agecroft Hall Annual Pass holders and Virginia Holocaust Museum members.
