Spring Fundraiser
A Gift-Matching Challenge in Honor of Agecroft Hall's Founding Virginian Matriarch
An anonymous donor has made a generous gift of $1,000!
This donor will dollar-for-dollar match donations up to a total of $1,000 if Agecroft Hall is successful in raising that amount or more by Sunday, May 5th -- the birthday of Elizabeth "Bessie" Williams Morton, Agecroft Hall's dedicated twentieth-century owner.
All of us who enjoy the history and the wonderful serenity that the museum and gardens offer to the Richmond community and to travelers from near and far owe our thanks to Bessie.
As a non-profit organization, Agecroft Hall and Gardens relies heavily on community support. Help us ensure a bright future for Agecroft Hall and Gardens so that we may continue to amaze and delight many generations to come and read on to learn more about the woman behind it all, Elizabeth "Bessie" Williams Morton.
Elizabeth "Bessie" Williams Morton (May 5, 1892-August 25, 1984) resided at Agecroft Hall for 40 years, outliving both her husbands, businessman T.C. Williams, Jr. and Dr. David C. Morton.
Beginning in the mid-1920s, Bessie made many decisions regarding the rebuilding and interior decorating of Agecroft Hall. She carefully planned the landscaping and the gardens in partnership with renowned landscape architect Charles Gillette.
Agecroft was always intended to be a museum following its life as a private residence, as outlined in T.C.’s will. Bessie left Agecroft Hall in 1967, and the manor home opened to the public on July 5, 1969.
Today, Bessie's gardens continue to offer visitors to Agecroft Hall moments of joyful discovery and peaceful relaxation, while her home lives on as a marvel of Tudor architecture and design, each year welcoming thousands of visitors from around the globe and from our region's schools.
We are grateful for her legacy.
